A Groupie’s Guide to CMW 2017

Not sure how to navigate the hundreds of venues and bands to check out this CMW 2017? No troubles. Let our Groupie Instincts guide you to what we think are going to be some of the best shows this coming week.

We’re going to start our week fairly chill- we don’t want to over-do it on the first night. Rookie mistake. We’ll be at The Silver Dollar to see The Zoobombs (not that we consider them chill), their artist description on the CMW page says it all. “Zoobombs are a Japanese Rock Band from Tokyo, formed in the full moon night in 1994”. We don’t (yet) know the rest of the bands playing with them, but it’s one of those times we do absolutely no prior listening and show up to (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised. Show starts at 8, Zoobombs on at 11pm.

We will be at the Phoenix for the Indies w/ Indie88. They have a killer line up all night long from 7- 11:30pm and there’s no way we want to miss ANY of the bands that are playing, so we’re staying put.

The Artists Playing are:
The Nursery– Winner of the Jim Beam Make History Talent Search
The Wooden Sky– We’re long time fans and in love with their new album
Repartee– Again, long time fans! They’re nominated for Pop Artist/ Group of the Year
Dan Mangan– Recipient of the Make History Award and Nominated for Song Writer of the Year
Hollerado– Chanty saw them open for the Sam Roberts Band a few months ago and they were killer
54-40– Need we say more? We will. They’re Canadiana Classic and are being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Indies. We can’t wait to interview them and dance on stage!

If we weren’t camping out at this show all night, we’d be seeing:

The Balconies (Adelaide Hall- 11:30pm)
Monomyth and NOBRO (The Baby G- 10pm and 11pm)
Charlotte Day Wilson (The Mod Club 10pm)
Danko Jones (Velvet Underground 12am) – Actually, we will most likely run to this one after everything is finished at the Phoenix.

Denise Donlon is the Celebrity Interview at CMW this week. We’ll be attending her talk at the Osgoode Ballroom at 1:15 to devour every delicious word she has to say!

We will also be spending the day doing some interviews with some amazing bands at the CMW Sheraton Hotel, but after that…

We’ll be checking the Aussie Night Out at the Hideout because a) Australian’s are like cuter, drunker Canadians and b) Our rock and Roll Oracle, Agnes DeMarco loves Aussies. We’ll see you there at 6pm.

Aussie bands we’re excited to check out are: Quivers, Eliza & The Delusionals, Bad Pony, and Silver Love Club.

Aftter that we’ll be at:

Matt Mays at Lee’s Palace (11pm) (We love Matt and Chanty especially loves his left handed guitar player)

Chanty is going to try and catch Amelia Curran, Tanya Tagaq and Whitehorse show at the Phoenix which starts at 8pm… Lynx will tweet you her location!

Honourable show mention goes to:
Walrus (The Horseshoe 10pm)

Remember we mentioned the incredible Denise Donlon? We have the absolute Groupie pleasure of interviewing her during the afternoon. Goodness Glory Groupie Hallelujah!

The Dine Alone Showcase is a Must. Lee’s Palace 8pm- 2am.

We’re pumped for:

The Sadies (We saw them live at a taping of Vish Khanna’s Late Night and will be seeing them again!)
The Dandy Warhols (Lynx’s most anticipated must see band of the festival!)
The Beaches (Horseshoe Tavern 11pm)

We will also be running around to:
Les Deuxluxes (Supermarket in Kensington- 7pm)
and if we can swing it:
Wolf Parade (The Great Hall- 12am)

You’ve Changed Records is having their 8th Anniversary party, and we will be there to celebrate with them! The artist we are most excited for is:

Daniel Romano- Chanty is pump pump pumped to see him for the first time after years of listening to the King of Mosey. He’s also up for an Indie in the category of Singer/ Songwriter of the Year. Shotgun Jimmie will also be playing! (Long Boat)

Weaves– Check them out ahead of time and you’ll know exactly why we want to see them. (Lee’s Palace)
Crownlands/ Cola Heads (The Bovine) Highly recommended by Lynx!

Since Chanty spent 4 years living in Halifax, the East Coast music runs in her veins. She’ll be seeing some friends at the Tiki Showcase including Arsoniste and Jessie Brown. (Rivoli 6pm)

Fred Penner at the Lula Lounge, 2pm. What a beautiful way to end the festival. I’m a Fred Head- are you? Not sure what that means? No problem, we’ll be interviewing him and talking all about it.

We cant wait to see you this week, please don’t be shy to say hi and join us on the dance floor!

Your friends,
Chanty and Lynx
